Protect Federal Arts, Humanities, and Environmental Programs

The Issue

President Trump’s transition team is conspiring to privatize the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, eliminate the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, as well as severely roll back funding for the Violence Against Women Act and the Department of Energy. Also, President Trump’s pick to head up the Office of Management and Budget (it is what it sounds like it is) Mick Mulvaney, will gleefully enact these plans. Yup, it’s a lot to take in.

Why You Should Care

If you care even a little bit about art, the environment, public media, and the safety of women then you should definitely give a shit about this. Also, these programs make up less than .003% of the federal budget so this is pretty much all political grandstanding fuckery. If this was really about the budget, they would cut something that would actually impact the budget.

What You Can Do About It

The Senate has to vote to confirm Mick Mulvaney as the head of the Office of Management and Budget. Mr. Mulvaney will have a significant amount of power to decide which of these programs the new administration will try to kill first. Contact your people and let them know you’re having NONE of this. Vote no on Mulvaney!

Subject Line: How I Want My Taxes Spent

Dear [official title] [official last name],

I am a [place you are registered to vote in] resident, voter, and taxpayer. As your constituent, I should get a say in how my taxes are spent. I was deeply disappointed to learn that President Trump’s team is already planning to privatize the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, as well as eliminate funding for the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities. In addition to these cuts, rolling back funding for the Violence Against Women Act and the Department of Energy is unacceptable. And, what frustrates me the most, President Trump’s pick to head up the Office of Management and Budget, Mick Mulvaney, supports these cuts.

I’m proud of this country’s legacy of pioneering new technology to find alternative energy sources, supporting thriving and influential arts and culture programs, and protecting vulnerable members of society.

Your constituents are well aware that these programs make up less than .003% of the federal budget. This isn’t about trimming the national debt, this is about winning primaries with cheap stunts. Please vote to protect these programs and do not confirm appointees who want to cut them.

Sincerely,

[your name]
